A chat with Dr.Devi Shetty (Heart Specialist),
Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore was arranged by WIPRO for its employees .
The transcript of the chat is given below. Useful for everyone.

Qn: What are the thumb rules for a layman to take care of his heart?

Ans:
1. Diet – Less of carbohydrate, more of protein, less oil
2. Exercise – Half an hour’s walk, at least five days a week; avoid lifts and avoid sitting for a longtime
3. Quit smoking
4. Control weight
5. Control blood pressure and sugar

Qn: Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?

Ans: No

Qn: It’s still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person
gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?

Ans: This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.

Qn: Are heart diseases hereditary?

Ans: Yes

Qn: What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?

Ans: Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.

Qn: Is walking better than jogging or is more intensive exercise required to keep a healthy heart?

Ans: Walking is better than jogging since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints

Qn: You have done so much for the poor and needy. What has inspired you to do so?

Ans: Mother Theresa , who was my patient

Qn: Can people with low blood pressure suffer heart diseases?

Ans: Extremely rare

Qn: Does cholesterol accumulates right from an early age
(I’m currently only 22) or do you have to worry about it only after you are above 30 years of age?

Ans: Cholesterol accumulates from childhood.

Qn: How do irregular eating habits affect the heart ?

Ans: You tend to eat junk food when the habits are irregular and your body’s enzyme release for digestion gets confused.

Qn: How can I control cholesterol content without using medicines?

Ans: Control diet, walk and eat walnut.

Qn: Can yoga prevent heart ailments?

Ans: Yoga helps.

Qn: Which is the best and worst food for the heart?

Ans: Fruits and vegetables are the best and the worst is oil.

Qn: Which oil is better – groundnut, sunflower, olive?

Ans: All oils are bad .

Qn: What is the routine checkup one should go through? Is there any specific test?

Ans: Routine blood test to ensure sugar, cholesterol is ok. Check BP, Treadmill test after an echo.

Qn: What are the first aid steps to be taken on a heart attack?

Ans: Help the person into a sleeping position , place an aspirin tablet under the tongue with a sorbitrate tablet if available, and rush him to a coronary care unit since the maximum casualty takes place within the first hour.

Qn: How do you differentiate between pain caused by a heart attack and that caused due to gastric trouble?

Ans: Extremely difficult without ECG.

Qn: What is the main cause of a steep increase in heart problems amongst youngsters? I see people of about 30-40 yrs of age having heart attacks and serious heart problems.

Ans: Increased awareness has increased incidents.. Also, sedentary lifestyles, smoking, junk food, lack of exercise in a country where people are genetically three times more vulnerable for heart attacks than Europeans and Americans.

Qn: Is it possible for a person to have BP outside the normal range of 120/80 and yet be perfectly healthy?

Ans: Yes.

Qn: Marriages within close relatives can lead to heart problems for the child. Is it true?

Ans : Yes, co-sanguinity leads to congenital abnormalities and you may not have a software engineer as a child

Qn: Many of us have an irregular daily routine and many a times we have to stay late nights in office. Does this affect our heart ? What precautions would you recommend?

Ans : When you are young, nature protects you against all these irregularities. However, as you grow older, respect the biological clock.

Qn: Will taking anti-hypertensive drugs cause some other complications (short / long term)?

Ans : Yes, most drugs have some side effects. However, modern anti- hypertensive drugs are extremely safe.

Qn: Will consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?

Ans : No.

Qn: Are asthma patients more prone to heart disease?

Ans : No.

Qn: How would you define junk food?

Ans : Fried food like Kentucky , McDonalds , samosas, and even masala dosas..

Qn: You mentioned that Indians are three times more vulnerable. What is the reason for this, as Europeans and Americans also eat a lot of junk food?

Ans: Every race is vulnerable to some disease and unfortunately, Indians are vulnerable for the most expensive disease.

Qn: Does consuming bananas help reduce hypertension?

Ans : No.

Qn: Can a person help himself during a heart attack (Because we see a lot of forwarded emails on this)?

Ans : Yes. Lie down comfortably and put an aspirin tablet of any description under the tongue and ask someone to take you to the nearest coronary care unit without any delay and do not wait for the ambulance since most of the time, the ambulance does not turn up.

Qn: Do, in any way, low white blood cells and low hemoglobin count lead to heart problems?

Ans : No. But it is ideal to have normal hemoglobin level to increase your exercise capacity.

Qn: Sometimes, due to the hectic schedule we are not able to exercise. So, does walking while doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs in the house, work as a substitute for exercise?

Ans : Certainly. Avoid sitting continuously for more than half an hour and even the act of getting out of the chair and going to another chair and sitting helps a lot.

Qn: Is there a relation between heart problems and blood sugar?

Ans: Yes. A strong relationship since diabetics are more vulnerable to heart attacks than non-diabetics.

Qn: What are the things one needs to take care of after a heart operation?

Ans : Diet, exercise, drugs on time , Control cholesterol, BP, weight.

Qn: Are people working on night shifts more vulnerable to heart disease when compared to day shift workers?
i
Ans : No.

Qn: What are the modern anti- hypertensive drugs?

Ans : There are hundreds of drugs and your doctor will chose the right combination for your problem, but my suggestion is to avoid the drugs and go for natural ways of controlling blood pressure by walk, diet to
reduce weight and changing attitudes towards lifestyles.

Qn: Does dispirin or similar headache pills increase the risk of heart attacks?

Ans : No.

Qn: Why is the rate of heart attacks more in men than in women?

Ans : Nature protects women till the age of 45.

Qn: How can one keep the heart in a good condition?

Ans : Eat a healthy diet, avoid junk food, exercise everyday, do not smoke and, go for health checkup s if you are past the age of 30 ( once in six months recommended) ..

The controlled PRO system presence detector from Steinel are now equipped with the KNX interface and are capable of performing the functions such as standard presence detection, controlling lighting with brightness control and controlling the HVAC system.

The KNX families of products is generally used for large scale installations and have a field bus which provides them the facility of inter-connecting individual components for building automation services. Therefore, the sensor after installation is generally controlled by a server with the ETS software which is capable of programming individual sensors from a remote location. This sensor can then be programmed for controlling services such as lighting, HVAC, alarms, surveillance systems, maintenance work and building protection etc.

KNX is used for interconnecting various devices (via twisted cable pairs, wireless link, 230 V mains power, IP/Ethernet). Data can then be communicated freely between individual components irrespective of the make or type of application. The various components can be configured or re-configured at any time to suit individual requirements of the site.

Two special IR remote controls are available as optional accessories for Steinel KNX enabled presence detector. These allow the user to make setting very easily for lighting, dimming as as well as saving and retrieving upto four scenarios. Brightness measurement can be calibrated by remote control, detector parameters can be changed without using the ETS software and a test mode can be started and terminated. In the KNX version, parameters changed by the IR remote control can be read by the field bus on the remote server/ ETS software.

The KNX version provides the user with the master and slave option wherein the presence detection zone can be extended by connecting as many as four additional presence detectors (slaves) to the master via the communication bus. The main detector (master) ascertains overall presence (whether the person is present in any one of the detecting zones), controls lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning for the entire room and sense the relevant objects. A slave delivers the presence on or off information to the main detector.

Monday, 7th June 2010, Mumbai, India : Pammvi Group of Companies have introduced low cost, German quality HL 1400 S Aktion heat shrink guns for pvc shrink film wrapping used extensively for the packaging industry. Steinel German quality hand-held hot air guns are used for various applications like paint stripping, heat shrinking of cable sleeves and shrink wrapping of PVC films for the packaging industry.

Steinel German Quality light weight handy hot air gun

Steinel Heat Shrink Gun HL 1400 S

can be operated in two stages. In the first stage there is air temperature of 300 degree celsius at an air flow of 240 l/min, while in the second stage there is temperature of 500 degree celsius at an air flow of 450 l/min. This low-cost economy model can be placed upright for a hands free operation making it convenient for the user for multiple applications. This is also an essential technical necessity as the hot air accumulated during the operation needs to be exhausted upwards after turning off the gun. This ensures a longer life of the heating coil. The heat gun is warranted for 12 months.

This low-weight shrink wrap gun has an ergonomically shaped handle and with an industrial grade rubber power cord having a length of 3 meters for convenient operations. The hot air gun has a hook for suspension when not in use.

The gun bears a CE marking. There is a choice and accessories available for optimizing specific applications like paint stripping and shrink tubing of pvc sleeves.

Air Control PRO Signal

It’s a matter of quality: Air Control

Presence detectors also provide the capability of controlling heating, ventilation, air-conditioning in relation to whether or not persons are present. This makes a lot of sense from an energy point of view as it can save large quantities of it: If nobody’s there, why keep the heating on all the time.

Yet, gradually, another aspect’s creeping into the focus of discussion: air quality or the content of CO2 in room air. Ventilation systems require energy and the air that’s exchanged needs either heating or cooling. But the mere presence of persons is not enough for air to be exchanged through a ventilation system or automatically controlled window. What’s important is the quality of air.

People inhale O2 and exhale CO2. This is a situation everyone’s familiar with: as the meeting wears on, concentration lapses and, at some point everybody’s tired, and later on people start to get a headache. The reason for this is the content of CO2 in room air. Unfortunately, this is something people only notice when it’s far too late to remedy the situation and actively provide ventilation. This is where Air Control sensor comes in – because it measures the amount of CO2 that’s present in room air.

AC PRO Signal

What is DALI? DALI is an acronym for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. It is an international standard that guarantees the exchangeability of dimmable ballast from different manufacturers. This gives planners, luminaire manufacturers, building owners, installers and end users the safety of supply from multiple sources.

The DALI interface has been described in the fluorescent lamp ballast standard IEC-60929 as a simplified digital communication to suit present day-lighting technologies. Of Communication and installation have been simplified as much as possible. All intelligent components communicate in a local system in a way that is both simple and free of interference. There are no special requirements of wiring data cables, and it is not necessary to install termination resistors on the cables to protect them against reflections. All lighting component manufacturers are now in a position to solve complex lighting tasks in a simple and comfortable way.

DALI advantages: Users have the following advantages when installing DALI ballasts in their lighting system.

Simple wiring of control lines (no group formation and no polarity)

Control of individual units (individual addressing) or groups (group addressing) is possible

A simultaneous control of all units is possible at any time (built-in initial operation function) through broadcast addressing

No interference of data communication is to be expected due to the simple data structure

Controlled device status messages (lamp fault etc.), (report options: all/ by group/ by unit)

Automatic search of controlled devices

Simple formation of groups through “flashing” lamps

Automatic and simultaneous dimming of all units when selecting a scene

Logarithmic dimming behaviour – matching the eye’s sensitivity

System with a signed intelligence (every unit contains amongst other things the following data: individual address, group assignment, lighting scene values, feeding time, etc.)

Operation tolerances of lamps can be stored as default values (for example – for the purposes of energy savings some maximum values can be set)

Fading: adjustment of dimming speed

Identification of unit type

Options for emergency lighting can be chosen (selection of specific ballasts, dimming level)

No need to switch on/off the external relay for the mains voltage as this is done by the internal electronic component

Lower system cost and more functions compared to the analog 1-10V dimming systems

DALI has been defined for:

A maximum of 64 single units (individual addresses)

A maximum of 16 groups (group addresses)

A maximum of 16 scenes (scene light values)

The intelligence of the system has not been centralized for the purpose of defining the DALI interface for controlled devices. This means that many of the DALI options and lighting values are stored within each individual ballasts:

Individual addresses

Group assignments

Fading times

Light scene values

Emergency lighting level (system failure level)

Power ON level

DALI closes the gap between the conventional 1-10V interfaces and complex lighting control systems.

The application of motion sensors that was just restricted to control lights of a room has taken a step further and can now control Air Conditioners and Heaters. Controlling the usage of Air Conditioners and Heaters such that they are activated only when it is actually required could help in curtailing the energy bills.

Motion Sensing is being increasingly used for automated control of lighting, heating and air conditioning loads on a “need based” situation. In tropical countries, one finds copious amount of natural light prevalent in a facility which obviates the use of artificial light in a task area. The use of occupancy sensors and motion detectors facilitate the patron to conserve energy bills on account of these lighting loads. However, the introduction of controlling and managing HVAC loads parallely with the lighting loads, provides a new dimension to saving energy bills consummately.

The new generation of occupancy sensors / motion detectors are now available with an independent galvanically separated output which permits the sensor to control the air conditioning loads distinctly and separately from the lighting loads.

Typically, a sensor is activated based on the lux setting programmed and the presence or absence of a human being in an area. Therefore, if the lux from the natural light is more than the lux level programmed in the sensors, typically the sensor will not activate the lighting loads even if there is any human presence.

Control PRO presence IR QUATTRO

However, with the option of the HVAC now controlled by the sensors, the connected air conditioning / heating load can be activated on the presence of a human being even if the lux from the natural light is higher than the programmed lux level of the sensor.

Air conditioning, in general can be found either as an individual unit or as a unit which is part of a centrally controlled system. The latter is known as a F.C.U. or Fan Coil Unit while the former known as either a split unit or window unit. These loads are switched using a relay or a contactor which in turn actuated by the sensor. The most common ratings for either the relay or the contactor are 22 Amps for a 1 Tr load or 32 Amps for a 1.5 Tr load.

The time setting of these sensors is programmed to suit the vacancy pattern of that area where the sensor is installed. Installation scenarios and requirements can vary from area to area. Basic installation provides for a panel housing which contains the switching device while more advanced installations require the use multi-pole rotary switches for bypassing the sensor in the event of any malfunction.

The sensors that can be used for these applications are

1. Passive Infrared or P.I.R.

2. High Frequency, Ultrasonic or Doppler

3. Acoustic

4. Multi sensor using a combination of the foresaid technologies

These sensors are available either in wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted categories which can either be hard-wired or wireless.

The Return On Investment (R.O.I.) for these sensors can range from 8 months to 12 months depending on the occupancy pattern of the area where these sensors are installed along with the energy costs that can differ from location to location. The installation and commissioning of this solution can take anywhere between 2-3 hours.

Lighting generically constitutes about 70% of a facilitie’s energy consumption. Sensible and logical incorporation of daylight harnessing technology can help save substantial amounts of energy. Modern day contemporary structures are being designed to maximize daylight infusion with a view to reduce the galloping consumption of artifical lighting.

The archteypal old buildings were designed with a view to harness daylight in every corner of the structure so also ensure cross ventilation for cooling the interiors. Artificial lighting not only increases the energy consumption on account of lighting but also generates heat in the ambient which increases the energy consumption on account of the HVAC system.

Therefore daylight harnessing can play a dual role in reduction of the energy consumption on account of lower lighting and airconditioning bills.

To control these ballasts we have two types of sensors i.e. analog and digital. Depending on the daylight entering the room, the sensor will release appropriate voltage and the illumination of the ballast will be controlled with it.

Another technology covering daylight harnessing is the light switch. Light switch basically works on the concept of amount of lux it detects and based on that it will control the lighting systems. This technology is very useful in outdoor daylight harnessing.

Proper building designs and intelligent application of technologies to control glare and solar heat gain can cut energy bills by more than half.

The days when electricity was not invented, designing buildings with proper entrance for daylight into it was necessity. Yet despite a long history of using daylighting as a design strategy, building owners, architects, engineers and lighting designers are only just beginning to understand how to use it effectively.

In the 1990s as a response to the emerging knowledge that buildings were wasting natural resources and energy, the AIA Committee on the Environment provided a list of measures to be used as metrics when selecting building systems. This article will describe some of the ways in which manufacturers are meeting the challenges posed by the AIA as well as the U.S. Green Building Council, to provide products that are beneficial to the environment.

The problem is the incredible amount of energy in sunlight. On a clear day, the sun provides 8,000 to 10,000 foot-candles of light. Even through the glass, it provides 5,000 foot-candles on a clear day and 1,000 foot-candles on a cloudy day. Most people need a mere 35 foot-candles to read. Compounding the problem is sunlight is as much heat as visible light. The sunlight that pours through a typical 4-by-8-foot window section in an afternoon can heat 15 to 30 gallons of water to a temperature hot enough to take a shower.

A good daylighting design can save up to 75 percent of the energy used for electric lighting in a building. Electric lights also generate significant heat in a building and by turning off or dimming the lights when not needed, 10 to 20 percent of the energy used to cool a building can be saved. We can make use of sensors and dimming solutions to control the lighting solutions and also our other electrical appliances.

“Daylighting is directly related to the idea of carbon reduction. For every kilowatt hour of energy we save, we’re cutting approximately two and a half pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.”

DAYLIGHT HARNESSING
